Low vision services

Our low vision service is available to anyone with low vision who is registered with a GP practice in Gateshead. It is based at our centre in Bensham Hospital.

What is low vision?

If you can’t see clearly even after you have had recent eye test and are wearing the right glasses or contact lenses you may have low vision.

You may find you can’t see to read your newspaper or magazines, the television is a blur and you can’t see people’s faces clearly. If this sounds familiar we may be able to help you.

How can we help you?

Our team of optometrists and rehabilitation workers will carry out a full assessment of your sight and provide you with expert advice and appropriate aids such as magnifiers, anti-glare shields and some lighting solutions to help you to make the most of your remaining vision.

Following your first visit to our low vision service your rehabilitation worker will visit you at home to make sure the aids we issued are suitable for your needs and to look at your lighting to check whether there are any improvements we can suggest.

If you are housebound and unable to leave your home we can carry out your low vision assessment at home.

Follow up care

You will be offered a review appointment every two years or sooner if it is appropriate. During your review we will check that your magnifiers are still the right ones for you or replace them if you need something stronger.

Don’t just take our word for it. Here are a few quotes from people who have used this service recently:

“I found the people were very friendly and explained everything clearly. I was also visited at home to see if I was coping ok. I will definitely recommend your service and thank you.”

Magnifiers are essential. I use mine every day.”

“Everyone was very helpful”
